This episode, I have something really special. It’s a performance from the Show-me Blowout by ’60s garage rocker Craig Moore. Craig Moore was one of the original members of the 1960s band Gonn from Keokuk, Iowa. Now I don’t really expect most of you to have heard of Gonn because they never really broke out as a national act. But one of their records, “Blackout of Gretely” did become a classic long after the band broke up when collectors started digging up forgotten garage rock recordings from the ’60s, and it was included on the essential collection of underground garage rock, Nuggets. The band recorded about 13 songs in their short carreer in the ’60s and one other one, “Doin’ Me In,” got some notoriety in the late ’90s when it was finally released for the first time on the compilation released by AIP records (one of the Bomp labels). And that is the song I have for you on this episode of LO-FI SAINT LOUIS, Craig Moore performed this song with The Nevermores (our own local St. Louis garage rock gods) at the Show-Me Blowout a couple of weeks ago. Craig is 61 years old now and a grandfather, but he still rocks harder than most kids a third of his age, and he still has that classic scream.

Hearing that - you’d never guess he was 61.

  2. Schlomo Rabinowitz:

I know that song!!! (of course, because the Nuggets boxset)

I hope I can rock as good at that age.

  3. kopper:

Bill, their other song is “Blackout of Gretely” (not Breakout)… just want to make sure you get that right when you post the Geargrinders episode. I fixed it in the post above for you.

  4. Bill:

This song was from Pebbles Vol. 10, not Nuggets. The song from Nuggets he performed with The Geargrinders later that night and will be featured here soon. But yeah, he rocks. He wants to bring Gonn to St. Louis in a few months. I hope it works out.

Dig it! Craig still has one of the best primal step-on-the-cat’s-tail death-defying rock screams up there with the Swamp Rats’s apocalyptical remake of “Psycho.” And he plus the mighty Nevermores do a punchin’-bag job on “Doin’ Me In,” one of the best mindshattering ’60s punkers of all time (I’m spinning the Emil 45 as I type). Craig, you’ve earned your place in garage rock history just on those manic screams!!!

  6. Bill Futreal:

    Totally kicks ass!

  7. Bowls:

I noticed some continuity flaws in your intro. VERY Sublimimal.

This band is practically a St. Louis institution, except they might have a problem with being called a St. Louis band, since their official headquarters is in DeSoto Missouri. They've probably had more success overseas than here, most recently tourin...

#224 Mucca Pazza

When was the last time you saw a marching band that just completely rocked? Until I saw Chicago's own punk rock marching band, Mucca Pazza I hadn't either. This 25 to 35 member marching band nearly blew the Bluebird down a couple of months ago. This ...

This is a 4 piece band with 2 members--I could make a lot of punny jokes here, like, this is a band that likes to play with themselves blah blah etc. Basically they've done something unique and creative. They play 4 instruments between them by multip...

This band has been kicking around St. Louis for the last 12 years or so. Amazingly, I really haven't shot video of them until now. I did catch Craig Daddy and with his other band (The Car Bombs) about a year ago, but this is the first time I've shot ...

If you own the Nuggets box set or are a big fan of '60s garage rock, you may already know about this band from Keokuk, Iowa, and their contribution to the set, "Blackout of Gretely." If you don't know what Nuggets is, it's a collection of music recor...
