#179 Blowfly!
Posted on: July 26, 2007
WARNING! This is DIRTY WEEK on LO-FI SAINT LOUIS. If you are offended by offensive language you’ll want to skip the next couple of episodes. This isn’t for the faint of heart.
Blowfly started his career in the 1960s as a songwriter (he’s written songs under his real name, Clarence Reid). He wrote songs for Betty Wright, Sam & Dave, Gwen McRae and KC & the Sunshine Band, among others. But he always had a second career as the dirty rapper, Blowfly. Blowfly dresses up in a super villain costume and does and act that is nothing short of filthy dirty. He played at the Atomic Cowboy in St. Louis recently, and assaulted everyone present with his offensive show. He isn’t without merit, though. He is widely credited with recording the first rap song, Rap Dirty in 1965. You can find his records on Alternative Tentacles.
Hey check out the Circuit, where you can interact with other fans of LO-FI SAINT LOUIS and find out what else is happening in the St. Louis music and culture scene.

and i thought it would’ve been too dirty to have posted. i’ve been waiting on this a long time. anyone interested can check out my slideshow on flickr, which is vicitm to some of the same lighting problems witnessed here.
also it’s about time we kicked off The Circuit propper. seriously folks, try it out. a great compliment to this city, much less this site.
Whoa!
missed this one.. I saw Blowfly in the mid/late nineties with the Brand New Heavies backing him up (he was opening for them), but the Heavies apparently got freaked out by his lyrics and left the stage after a couple of songs..
I don’t think “Rap Dirty” counts as an actual rap/hip-hop recording but it is certainly a notable precursor/foreshadowing..
