If you are a graphic designer that likes the roughed up look–the grungy look, then chances are you’ve been influenced by Art Chantry, whether you know it or not. He made a name for himself by making fucked-up graphics for bands like, oh I dunno… Mudhoney, The Makers, Nirvana, The Breeders and labels like Estrus, Sub-Pop and tons of others.
Art started out in Seattle, but now lives in St. Louis. He has an exhibit up right now at the Philip Slein Gallery (details here). The posters are for sale, and if you hurry you might be able to still catch the show. If not check out Art’s web store at (you guessed it) ArtChantry.com. There is also a book about him entitled: Some People Can’t Surf by Julie Lasky and you can pick that up here.

Thanks, I always wondered how a Chantry expo would be with such an extense body of work as he has.
Great Video
Hot damn, that was a great fucking interview.
I love album art, which is the sole reason I buy CD’s at all these days. Most the time I download all the songs before the CD comes out, then go buy the disc for the album art. That’s only if the art is worth a crap though, like Radiohead or something. I used to have the liner notes to Bleach tacked up above my bed. Damn I miss Nirvana.
Very good segment on an interesting individual with a humongous body of work. You can’t blink during viewing or you’ll miss something here. Somehow, you need to get a piece like this broadcast on local Public TV to help promote the event. Like Art Chantry, you moved to St. Louis not too many years ago and have embraced the local culture. Many lifetime St. Louisans seem to overlook or take for granted what you have found to interest you enough to tell the world about the USA’s “largest small town”.
First of all, this guy was really interesting and second really nicely done video.
Once again… I can’t watch any of this!!! Bill: start using a 8 year old Dell on dial up.
Hey Doc have you tried VLC? Check it out at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ it works with all operating systems and plays almost everything.
Bill – I downloaded VLC. Now, when I go to download a video, nothing really happens. I mean, my computer is doing SOMETHING, but I don’t ever get a dialog box or anything that tells me what I’m downloading. Does that make sense?
HI, that was well excellent, I will actually bug you from now on. Your videos so far have both inspired me and given me a direction. There is so much going on and so much to video to tell everybody about on my vlog. I am the only person with a vlog for miles around, well me and my dad who also lives in nottingham. BTW the wife thinks you sound hot, sorry, she has a loaded gun to my head. But anyway very creative. please keep in touch. Or I may have to visit you. (That is not a real threat, doing movies with no budget, should be a hint as to my financial situation)
